Rittenhouse Psychiatric Associates offers child and adolescent psychiatric evaluations, medication management & treatment, and therapy in several states, in-office and online. We have fellowship trained and board certified psychiatrists and other experts, specializing in treating children and adolescents to help your children with a number of psychiatric conditions. We additionally can provide IEP/ 504 plan recommendations, accommodations for school for children, and coordinate services with your pediatrician, teacher and school.

Our providers will work with you to create a custom psychiatric treatment plan for your child.

Your First Visit for Child & Adolescent Psychiatry

Initial appointments for child and adolescent psychiatry are typically 60-90 minutes in length, with a Board Certified and Fellowship Trained Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist or Board Certified Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner, with training specifically in the Child & Adolescent population. Your child’s provider will include family in the evaluation, and will work to understand not only if there is an illness to treat (such as ADHD, Anxiety or Depression), but also how home life, school life, medical conditions and other factors are affecting your child, and their psychiatric symptoms. Workup may include laboratory tests and additional coordination with your child’s pediatrician. Recommendations may include child therapy online or in-office, psychiatric medication management, behavioral strategies, coping skills, 504/ IEP plans and/or accommodations for school and others. Plans are individualized and coordinated with school, pediatricians, family and others.

Our Fellowship Trained and Board Certified Child & Adolescent Psychiatrists, Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners and licensed Psychologists are able to provide therapy for children, in-office and online, in the states where they are licensed to practice medicine. Psychotherapy for children is evidenced-based, and may include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), supportive therapy, play therapy, family therapy, art therapy and/or other modalities. Medication Management for Children & Adolescents

The Child & Adolescent Fellowship trained and Board Certified Psychiatrists at Rittenhouse, understand that medications are not always the answer, and that medications can affect children in different ways. By performing a thorough initial evaluation, and fully understanding home life, school life and other factors that affect your child, they will aim to utilize psychiatric medication only when indicated, utilizing the lowest effective doses, and being sure that the prescription of medication is only one part of your child’s treatment plan. Our providers will work with parents to educate them on the risks and benefits of psychiatric medication management for children with anxiety, depression, ADHD, eating disorders, and other psychiatric conditions, and will be understanding should parents wish to work on other modalities of treatment first, before considering medications for their child.

What is child & adolescent psychiatry?

Child and adolescent psychiatry (CAP) generally refers to the treatment of psychiatric illness and the management of learning vulnerabilities by a mental health provider with additional training in serving this population. Child and adolescent psychiatrists must complete 4 years of college, 4 years of medical school, 3-4 years of adult psychiatry, and an additional 1-2 years of Fellowship Training in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. Then, they can become Board Certified, by passing the required examinations. Some providers, such as Nathan Hardy, MD, continue with even further training (Dr. Hardy completed a second fellowship in Perinatal Psychiatry and Infant Mental Health, prior to joining Rittenhouse). CAP is a highly specialized field.

Should I take my child to a child and adolescent psychiatrist or a general psychiatrist?

The presenting symptoms of a mood, anxiety, or learning disorder in a child are often quite different than the symptoms that an individual may present with in adulthood. For example, irritability or behavioral disturbances are commonly associated with the onset of depression in childhood, while sadness tends to be the initial complaint for adults. Having a provider with specialized training in child and adolescent psychiatry may increase the likelihood of obtaining an accurate diagnosis and the best treatment plan for the child’s anxiety disorder, depression, ADHD, or other difficulties.

When should I find psychiatric help for my child or adolescent?

The decision to seek a psychiatric evaluation, or to start psychotherapy or medication management for your child, is a personal and sensitive one. With that said, if a child is struggling with their mood, anxiety, academics and/or social life, their self-confidence, overall happiness and even future success can be stunted. We do not recommend medication management or psychotherapy for all children. However, we DO recommend that if you are concerned about your child, you schedule with an expert, who can assess your child’s condition, and thoroughly discuss their findings, and the risks and benefits of any treatment options, if applicable.

If parents or caregivers are looking for Autism Evaluations for children 18 months – 6 years of age, then we recommend our affiliate RiseNow Autism Innovations. RiseNow provides evaluations and diagnosis in 4 weeks or less, using FDA approved technology, that utilizes short videos that parents can take at home with their child. Families are paired with a specialist who confirms the diagnosis, and then they can start a weekly educational program until state run accommodations begin.
