We Welcome All Individuals Under the LGBTQQIAP+ Umbrella

At Rittenhouse Psychiatric Associates (RPA), we understand that gender and sexuality do not fit into neat, predefined boxes. Many of our patients identify as non-binary, trans, queer, bisexual, pansexual, gay, lesbian, fluid, questioning, and more. We welcome and affirm any identity. While under our care for psychiatric services, many of our patients receive gender-affirming treatment from other specialists. We are familiar with treatments that our patients may be receiving such as hormones, top, bottom, and facial surgeries. We aim to ensure that our patients know that we accept and support them no matter where they are on their life and identity journeys. We consider your journey when making decisions for medication or therapy-based interventions.

We Honor the Unique Challenges

All people face challenges throughout life, but certain challenges are more common in the LGBTQQIAP+ population. In 2022, all age groups of adult LGBT-identifying census respondents reported higher levels of depression and anxiety than their non-LGBT-identifying peers. In 2023, 41% of LGBTQ+ young people reported seriously considering attempting suicide in the past year on The Trevor Project’s National Survey on the Mental Health of LGBTQ Young People.

Feeling and/or being unseen, unheard, unaccepted, discriminated against, mistreated, confused, threatened, traumatized, bullied, alienated, and othered based on gender identity and sexuality likely contributes to the elevated level of depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation that we see in this population. Unfortunately, many of these experiences happen within the nuclear family as well as in the public for many LGBTQ+ young people.

We also understand there are additional complexities beyond the gender and sexuality spectrum that affect the mental well-being of the LGBTQ+ population. Racial identity, culture, location, family, and more factors also play a role.

We Respect Preferred Names and Pronouns

Although not every person feels strongly about pronouns and names, we know many do. We take the time and effort to learn and utilize patients’ preferred pronouns and names in direct interactions with patients and families, in documentation, and with case collaborators. We believe that this is a basic form of respect that all our patients deserve.

We Offer…

At RPA we offer medication management and therapy services to individuals with any sexual orientation and gender identity. We treat issues such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, trauma-related disorders (post-traumatic stress and others), attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), adjustment disorders, obsessive compulsive disorders (OCD), peri-natal mood and anxiety disorders, substance use disorders, pre-menstrual dysphoric disorder, insomnia, and more. Many of our providers are also able to assist patients engaged in ongoing treatment who are dealing with gender dysphoria and need letters of support for gender-affirming surgery. We understand that gender-affirming care is life-saving care.
