What is Men’s Mental Health?

Simply put, “Men’s Mental Health” refers to any psychiatric condition that may affect men. This may include anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, ADHD, Substance Use Disorders, and others. While these conditions can also affect women, we believe that talking openly about some of the unique challenges that men face, including societal norms and expectations regarding mental health treatment, is incredibly important. Mental illness affects both men and women, and unfortunately many men do not receive the mental health treatment that they require. In fact, although fewer men than women engage in mental health treatment in the United States, there are about 4 times a many completed suicides in the US annually in men, than in women. We believe that the normalization of mental health treatment for individuals of all genders, can be life-saving.

What Unique Challenges do Men Face, Regarding their Mental Health and Treatment?

  • Societal stigma and expectations that men should hold in their emotions, suffer in silence, or “tough it out” when it comes to their emotional difficulties.
  • Higher rates of substance abuse and dependence (drug & alcohol) than their female counterparts.
  • Higher rates of struggles related to anger.
  • Increased risks related to impulsivity and high-risk taking behaviors
  • Higher rates of sexual addiction and hyper-sexuality
  • Higher rates of gambling and the development of gambling problems

Why Talk about “Men’s Mental Health?”

Mental illness is not a sign of weakness. Anxiety, depression, ADHD, substance use disorders and other mental health struggles affect both men and women, and it’s incredibly important that all individuals know that it’s important to reach out for help, if you’re struggling with your mental health.
