What is EMDR?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a type of therapy that is used in the treatment of various mental health conditions including Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Complex PTSD (C-PTSD), Anxiety Disorders, Personality Disorders (such as Borderline Personality Disorder) and others.

While EMDR is a relatively new form of therapy (having been first investigated in 1989), it has been shown in dozens of papers and studies to be an effective form of psychotherapy, that can be particularly helpful in the treatment of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and psychological distress caused by Trauma. EMDR helps the brain to store and reprocess memories in a healthy way, which allows for healing from Trauma.

EMDR is based on the Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) model, which is a theory about how the brain stores memories. This model explains that healthy memories and traumatic memories are stored differently in the brain. Traumas are unfortunately often stored in a fashion that does not allow for healing, and can result in excessive psychological distress. EMDR works to reprocess these memories in a healthy fashion, reducing the distress caused by the traumatic memories and their triggers.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing is a non-pharmacologic treatment option for psychiatric difficulties, that can be used without, or in conjunction with, medication management. It is a safe form of treatment for Trauma, and can be utilized for children, adolescents and adults.

What does EMDR entail?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR) involves a mental health professional with specific training in this modality, guiding a patient to move their eyes in a specific way, while processing distressing memories and traumas. Some individuals prefer this therapeutic technique, as it does not involve excessive talking about traumas or triggers (which can be stressful and painful). Sessions are typically about 45-60 minutes in length, and patients generally have sessions anywhere from weekly, to once a month. Treatment will often last 3-6 sessions for processing specific traumatic events, but some individuals may benefit from up to 12 or more sessions, based on their specific history of trauma and the severity of their symptoms.

Why Might a Patient Prefer EMDR to other Therapies?

  • EMDR may work faster than other types of psychotherapy
  • EMDR may be preferred by some patients, as it involves less conversation about traumatic events, than may occur with other types of therapy, which can cause additional stress.
  • EMDR involves less assignments or “homework” between sessions, and some individuals may prefer EMDR over Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for that reason.

What Patients May Benefit from EMDR?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR) can be utilized to help individuals who struggle with various psychiatric conditions and distress from various types of trauma.

  • Individuals who suffer from distress caused by Traumatic events or distressing memories, may benefit greatly from Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR).
    • Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
    • Complex PTSD (C-PTSD)
