The Benefits of ADHD Skills Training

ADHD skills training for adults is a targeted therapeutic approach that equips individuals with practical strategies and tools to effectively manage the symptoms and challenges associated with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). ADHD skills training hones in on specific areas, such as:

  • Executive Functioning: Improving planning, organization, prioritization, and task initiation.
  • Time Management: Developing effective scheduling, punctuality, and productivity techniques.
  • Emotional Regulation: Learning to manage impulsivity, frustration, and mood swings.
  • Focus & Attention: Enhancing concentration and reducing distractibility.
  • Organizational Strategies: Creating systems for decluttering, managing paperwork, and maintaining order.
  • Relationship & Communication Skills: Addressing ADHD-related challenges in personal and professional interactions.

Through this training, adults learn concrete, actionable skills that can significantly reduce the daily impact of ADHD, leading to greater personal, academic, and professional success.

Our ADHD Programs for Adults

Led by Dr. Angelo Rannazzisi, Psy.D., our programs integrate advanced concepts of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, developed at The University of Pennsylvania with practical strategies to help manage your ADHD.

1) Individual Skills Training for ADHD utilizing CBT

Individual skills training utilizes Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) principles to help you develop mastery over your ADHD symptoms. This focuses on:

  • Identifying and challenging unhelpful thought patterns related to ADHD.
  • Developing personalized strategies for organization and planning.
  • Implementing practical time management techniques.
  • Improving focus and task completion.
  • Building resilience and self-awareness.

Each session is tailored to your specific challenges and goals. Patients typically begin with an initial 60-minute evaluation, followed by 45-minute follow-ups every 1 to 2 weeks for a total of 6–8 sessions. Many patients then transition to “booster” sessions every 4–6 weeks to maintain momentum, reinforce learned skills, and ensure long-term accountability and success throughout their academic or professional careers and beyond.

2) Psychotherapy for Anxiety, Depression and Mood Disorders, ADHD and General Life Struggles

Patients can also schedule an initial visit to engage in psychotherapy with Dr. Rannazzisi regarding struggles with Anxiety, Depression, Bipolar Disorder, ADHD and other general life struggles and transitions.

Dr. Rannazzisi will utilize not only CBT, but additional forms of psychotherapy, and tailor treatment to the individual. Skills training for ADHD may be part of your treatment, but Dr. Rannazzisi is an experienced clinician serving individuals with not only ADHD, but other general mental health difficulties.

FAQs About Adult ADHD Management

What are common therapy options for adult ADHD beyond medication?

Therapy options for adult ADHD often include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), specialized ADHD skills training, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Mindfulness-Based Therapies. These focus on developing coping strategies, improving executive functions, and managing emotional regulation. Dr. Angelo Rannazzisi specializes in individual ADHD skills training utilizing CBT to build practical, lasting skills.

How effective are non-drug therapies for managing ADHD in adults?

Non-drug therapies, such as ADHD skills training for adults, can be very effective, either alone or combined with medication. Many find these approaches significantly help manage symptoms like disorganization and impulsivity by building practical life skills. For some, they may reduce the need for medication.

What are some evidence-based non-pharmacological treatments for ADHD in adults?

Key evidence-based non-pharmacological treatments include structured psychotherapies like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and specialized ADHD skills training. These help improve executive functions, planning, and self-regulation. Lifestyle interventions (exercise, sleep, nutrition) are also important complementary strategies.

What are broader management approaches for adults with ADHD, especially with co-occurring conditions?

A holistic approach involves addressing co-occurring mental health conditions through integrative psychotherapy and/or medication management, exploring vocational accommodations, discussions on diet, exercise and behavioral modification, education, and sometimes family therapy and support groups. The goal is to manage symptoms comprehensively.
