1-Hour Adult ADHD Evaluations for Diagnosis and Accommodation Letters

At Rittenhouse Psychiatric Associates, we offer streamlined 1-hour psychiatric evaluations – both in-person and virtual – for the diagnosis of adult ADHD and documentation for school or workplace accommodations. While we also provide full-day neuropsychological testing when required, most patients seeking academic or professional support do not require extensive assessments. The following sections explain who might benefit from ADHD testing, what the evaluation includes, and how to determine the right type of assessment for your needs.

Do I Need an ADHD Evaluation as an Adult?

Diagnosing ADHD in adults requires specialized mental health training. Many symptoms, such as distractibility, forgetfulness, restlessness, or difficulty completing tasks, can overlap with conditions like anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, autism, and substance use disorders. That’s why it’s essential to work with a provider who can accurately distinguish ADHD from other diagnoses and recommend appropriate treatment or accommodations. Common reasons adults seek an ADHD evaluation include:

  • Ongoing struggles with focus, follow-through, or impulsive behavior
  • Challenges with organization, time management, or meeting deadlines
  • Difficulty sustaining performance at school or in professional settings
  • A recommendation from a physician, therapist, school official, or licensing board

A formal ADHD diagnosis from a qualified mental health provider is often required to:

  • Begin ADHD treatment or medication management with a primary care provider
  • Obtain academic accommodations for exams, coursework, or graduate programs
  • Qualify for extended time or other supports on standardized or licensing tests
  • Request workplace accommodations under ADA or HR policies

What Happens During an ADHD Testing Appointment?

During the clinical interview, your provider will review your current symptoms and explore how they’ve shown up throughout your life, starting in childhood. You’ll discuss personal, academic, and professional history to identify patterns consistent with adult ADHD. In some cases, input from a partner or family member may be helpful. Your provider will also screen for co-existing conditions and may use behavior rating scales to support the diagnostic process.

Is 1 Hour Enough to Diagnose Adult ADHD?

For many adults, a focused 1-hour psychiatric evaluation is sufficient to diagnose ADHD and provide documentation for school or workplace accommodations. These appointments are designed to assess symptoms, rule out other conditions, and offer expert recommendations efficiently. However, certain institutions, such as medical boards or licensing bodies, may require a full neuropsychological evaluation with formal testing and reports. Your provider can help determine which type of assessment best fits your needs. If a neuropsychological evaluation by a Psychologist is also required, Rittenhouse Psychiatric Associates can refer you to our providers who do those evaluations as well.

Can I Book a One-Time Evaluation for ADHD Accommodations?

Yes, Rittenhouse Psychiatric Associates offers one-time ADHD evaluations for adults seeking documentation for school or work accommodations. While ongoing treatment is recommended, patients are not required to continue care with our providers after the evaluation. Please note that if you choose a one-time appointment, our team will not be available for starting a prescription, or ongoing prescription management or follow-up services beyond that visit.

Why Follow-Up Treatment for Adult ADHD Matters

ADHD often exists alongside other mental health concerns like anxiety, depression, substance use, or impulse-control issues, which can impact relationships, work, and legal matters. Long-term success in managing ADHD symptoms typically involves expert treatment—whether through therapy, medication, or both. While quick online evaluations may seem convenient, they often lack proper oversight, board-certified providers, and comprehensive care. At Rittenhouse, our licensed professionals offer responsible, evidence-based treatment designed for your whole mental health picture—not just a diagnosis.

What Kinds of Accommodations Require an ADHD Diagnosis?

Many institutions require formal documentation from a qualified mental health provider to approve accommodations for adults with ADHD. This may include schools, universities, licensing boards, or employers. Requirements vary – some accept evaluations from psychiatrists or psychiatric nurse practitioners, while others may require a full neuropsychological report from a licensed psychologist. We recommend confirming your institution’s documentation criteria before scheduling. We do have psychologists available for more extensive testing, if required.

Cost of an Adult ADHD Evaluation

A standard 1-hour ADHD evaluation at Rittenhouse Psychiatric Associates costs $350 with a psychiatric nurse practitioner and $500 with most psychiatrists. If your school, workplace, or licensing board requires additional forms or documentation beyond the appointment summary, a small administrative fee (typically $50) may apply.

Can I have a 1-Time Appointment for an ADHD Diagnosis and Letter for Accommodations with your Providers?

While our Psychiatrists, Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner and Psychologists prefer that a patient continue with our practice for the treatment of their adult ADHD (with psychotherapy and/or medication management for ADHD), it is not a requirement. However, if a patient is seen for a one-time evaluation for ADHD, and they choose not to establish long-term care, then this would be a one-time service and the providers would not be available for prescription management.

Why Do You Recommend Follow-up with a Mental Health Professional for the Treatment of ADHD?

Individuals with Adult ADHD can have significant symptoms that interfere with both their personal and professional lives. ADHD can cause adults to struggle with employment, finances, interpersonal relationships, legal difficulties, substance abuse, gambling and other issues secondary to poor attention, hyperactivity and impulsivity.

Adults with ADHD have higher rates of anxiety, depression, problems related to anger and irritability, nicotine dependence, substance abuse, and even higher rates of motor vehicle accidents, than the general population. Working with a provider who is a trained expert in the evaluation and treatment of these co-morbid illnesses and difficulties, allows for the best treatment for the entire person – not just a singular diagnosis. Additionally, mental health providers receive training in the treatment of ADHD itself, beyond what primary care providers and general nurse practitioners receive in their training.

There are various types of medications that treat ADHD, including stimulants (controlled medications) and non-stimulant options. Most of these medications can affect one’s anxiety and mood (both positively and negatively, and several can have serious adverse side effects, including suicidal thoughts, risks of abuse and dependence, and even psychosis. We strongly advise against patients utilizing large on-line “ADHD companies” that hire non-board certified providers, without specific advanced training in mental health or Board Certification, and without the proper monitoring of psychiatric symptoms. “Subscription plan” mental health, is not quality mental health. What Does My School, Work or Examination Board Require for Accommodations for Adult ADHD?

We recommend that you contact your school, work or examination board, and ask for their specific requirements before booking an appointment with our office. Questions to ask:

  • Do you accept a diagnosis for ADHD and letter for accommodations by Psychiatrists and Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners? (If so, call to schedule)!
  • Do you require that a PhD or PsyD perform a full battery of neuropsychological tests, including standardized scores, and a formal report of those scores, in order to have accommodations? (If so, call about our neuropsychological testing with our licensed Psychologists. These tests are typically 4+ hours, in-office, and unfortunately more costly). These more extensive tests are typically required by medical boards for physicians, bar associations for lawyers and similar types of advanced certifications and testing.

What does a 1-Hour ADHD Evaluation Cost?

Please refer to our fees and policies for an updated schedule, but for 2025 a typical one-hour evaluation with our Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners cost $350 and with most of our Psychiatrists $500. There may be a small fee (for example, 50 dollars) if additional forms and administrative work is required by your institution.
